The ProQual Level 5 Diploma in Fire Engineering Design is an advanced Ofqual-regulated qualification developed for professionals seeking comprehensive knowledge of fire engineering principles and the design of fire safety solutions within the built environment. Positioned at Level 5 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), the qualification is aligned with the Engineering Council's UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment Contextualised for Higher-Risk Buildings ensuring that its content reflects current regulatory expectations and recognised engineering standards.
This diploma provides an in-depth understanding of fire science, fire engineering principles, and performance-based fire safety design. Learners explore the design and evaluation of automatic fire suppression systems, means of escape, occupant behaviour, structural fire resistance, smoke control and ventilation systems, external fire spread, external wall systems, and fire service intervention strategies. The programme also examines the application of engineering judgement, technical analysis, regulatory guidance, and evidence-based design methodologies to support safe and compliant building designs. Throughout the qualification, emphasis is placed on integrating fire safety into modern construction and engineering projects while addressing the complexities of higher-risk buildings and evolving building regulations.
Assessment is portfolio-based, enabling learners to demonstrate their knowledge and competence through practical evidence, technical reports, assignments, and professional documentation. The qualification offers a structured and comprehensive approach to fire engineering design that reflects current industry practice and regulatory requirements.
The ProQual Level 5 Diploma in Fire Engineering Design is an Ofqual-regulated qualification awarded by ProQual AB and accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). The qualification has been approved for delivery in England and is published on Ofqual’s Register of Qualifications. It has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 372 hours and Guided Learning Hours (GLH) of 134 hours.
Assessment is assignment-based, with the learner required to produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating achievement of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit. Assessment evidence can include assignments, projects, reports, professional discussions, candidate products and other appropriate evidence.
Assessment is conducted on a Pass/Fail basis and is internally assessed and verified by centre staff, with external quality assurance provided by ProQual Verifiers to ensure compliance with qualification standards. To achieve the qualification, the learner must successfully complete all eight mandatory units.
