The ProQual Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination Occupations (Construction) is a vocational qualification designed to recognise the knowledge, practical skills and occupational competence required for specialist testing and inspection roles within the construction industry. Accredited within the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and awarded by ProQual Awarding Body, the qualification provides a structured route for developing competence in workplace-based testing, inspection and thorough examination activities.
The qualification is particularly relevant to individuals working in technical construction environments where the operational serviceability, safety, integrity or performance of equipment, systems and structures must be assessed against appropriate requirements. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical learning, the qualification places emphasis on demonstrating occupational competence through workplace evidence and assessment against defined learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
Three specialist pathways are available, allowing the qualification to address different occupational requirements: Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination of Plant, Machinery, Equipment or Accessories; Leak Detection in Waterproof Systems; and Dynamic Pile Testing. Alongside the specialist pathway, mandatory units develop broader competence in planning work activities, managing resources, maintaining effective occupational relationships and confirming appropriate methods of work.
This makes the qualification relevant to construction professionals seeking formal recognition of practical competence in specialist testing, inspection and examination occupations. It can also provide a valuable foundation for demonstrating workplace capability, technical responsibility and adherence to structured construction-sector working practices.
he ProQual Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination Occupations (Construction) is awarded by ProQual Awarding Body and regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). The qualification is accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and is designed to recognise occupational competence in specialist testing, inspection and thorough examination activities within the construction sector.
The qualification has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 750 hours and 187 Guided Learning Hours (GLH). Assessment is evidence-based and assignment-based, enabling the candidate to demonstrate practical occupational competence, underpinning knowledge and the ability to apply appropriate working practices within a real or simulated workplace environment.
The qualification offers three specialist pathways:
To achieve the qualification, the candidate must successfully complete ALL Mandatory units, together with the Mandatory unit(s) for ONE selected pathway. This structure combines core occupational competence with specialist pathway knowledge and skills, allowing the qualification to reflect different professional roles within testing, inspection and thorough examination occupations in construction..
Core Study Units
The qualification specification requires the candidate to complete all three Mandatory Units before completing the mandatory unit or units associated with one selected specialist pathway.
Pathway 1 – Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination of Plant, Machinery, Equipment or Accessories
Mandatory Units – complete both units:
Pathway 2 – Leak Detection in Waterproof Systems
Mandatory Unit – complete this unit:
Pathway 3 – Dynamic Pile Testing
Mandatory Unit – complete this unit:
The ProQual Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination Occupations (Construction) is designed for individuals already working, or developing occupational competence, in construction-related testing, inspection and thorough examination activities. As an NVQ competence-based qualification, it is particularly suitable where practical workplace evidence can demonstrate the required occupational skills and knowledge. ProQual identifies the qualification within its Construction Occupational Skills provision, while the qualification specification includes specialist pathways covering plant and machinery, waterproofing leak detection, and dynamic pile testing.
