The ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drill Bit Technology and Applications is a UK-regulated qualification designed to develop foundational knowledge of drill bit technology and its applications within oil and gas drilling environments. It provides a structured understanding of drill bit types, designs, selection criteria, standard nomenclature, hydraulics, performance parameters and evaluation practices.
The qualification is particularly relevant to personnel seeking to strengthen their technical understanding of drilling operations, drill bit selection, well engineering and oil and gas drilling technology. Key areas include Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) and natural diamond bits, Weight on Bit (WOB), revolutions per minute (RPM), mud properties, hydraulic efficiency, penetration rate and International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) drill bit classification and dull grading systems.
The programme also introduces drill string and drill bit evaluation, including vibration, temperature, torque, tool wear and damage assessment, while providing insight into technological developments such as hybrid drill bits. These topics support informed technical decision-making and a stronger understanding of drilling efficiency and bit performance.
The ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drill Bit Technology and Applications is accredited onto the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), with Ofqual serving as the regulatory body for the qualification.
The ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drill Bit Technology and Applications is an Ofqual-regulated qualification accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). The qualification has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 30 hours and 30 Guided Learning Hours (GLH).
Assessment is assignment-based and conducted on a Pass/Fail basis. It is internally assessed and verified by centre staff, with external quality assurance provided by ProQual Verifiers to ensure compliance with recognised qualification and quality standards.
To achieve the qualification, learners must successfully complete one mandatory unit.

Entry Requirements
Career Opportunities
The ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drill Bit Technology and Applications provides learners with the essential knowledge required to develop careers and technical competence within drilling, oil and gas, well engineering, and energy-sector environments. As drilling operations increasingly focus on well performance, drilling efficiency, appropriate bit selection, and advanced drilling technologies, personnel with a sound understanding of drill bit technology are valuable across onshore and offshore drilling operations, drilling contractors, oilfield service companies, and well engineering teams.
Drilling Technician
Supports drilling operations by assisting with drill bit selection, equipment preparation, maintenance, and performance monitoring.
Junior Drilling Engineer
Assists engineering teams with drilling programmes, bit selection, performance analysis, and operational optimisation under supervision.
Drilling Operations Assistant
Supports rig teams with drilling activities, equipment coordination, operational documentation, and basic drill bit performance observations.
Well Engineering Technician
Provides technical support for well planning, drilling equipment selection, documentation, and well engineering activities.
Drill Bit Technician
Assists with inspecting, maintaining, evaluating, and preparing drill bits for efficient drilling operations.
Rig Operations Technician
Supports daily rig activities and helps monitor drilling equipment, operational parameters, and equipment performance.
Oilfield Service Technician
Provides field-based technical support for drilling equipment, including preparation, inspection, installation, and operational assistance.
Drilling Equipment Assistant
Supports the handling, preparation, inspection, and maintenance of drilling tools and associated equipment.
Future Progression
Upon successful completion of the ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drill Bit Technology and Applications, learners can progress to higher-level drilling, well engineering, oil and gas, and technical qualifications. The qualification provides a strong foundation for developing specialist knowledge in drill bit technology, drilling operations, bit selection, performance evaluation, and drilling efficiency.
Learners may progress through advanced drilling and well engineering qualifications, undertake continuing professional development (CPD), or pursue specialist training in areas such as drilling technology, well planning, drill string design, drilling fluids, and oilfield equipment.
The qualification can also support progression into roles including Drilling Technician, Junior Drilling Engineer, Drill Bit Technician, Well Engineering Technician, Drilling Operations Assistant, and Oilfield Service Technician. The knowledge gained is relevant across onshore and offshore drilling operations, oilfield service companies, drilling contractors, and energy-sector organisations.
