The ProQual Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Land Drilling Operations: Land Driller Support Operative is a practical, competence-based qualification designed for individuals developing or formally recognising occupational skills within land drilling operations. It provides a structured pathway for demonstrating workplace competence in drilling support activities, site safety, productive working practices, equipment and machinery checks, ground reinstatement, and the effective organisation of drilling-related activities. The qualification is particularly relevant to drilling assistants, land driller support operatives and other personnel working in ground investigation, construction, geotechnical, water well and related drilling environments. The official specification confirms that the qualification is designed to recognise knowledge, skills and competence demonstrated in the workplace.
The qualification is awarded by ProQual Awarding Body and regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). The qualification specification has been approved by the Welsh Government for use by centres in Wales and by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) for centres in Northern Ireland. It is accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and provides a progression route towards discipline-related qualifications within the construction sector.
For the Land Driller Support Operative pathway, the qualification combines mandatory workplace competence with selected pathway units covering areas such as reinstating ground conditions, basic plant or machinery maintenance, receiving and organising drilling materials and equipment, specialised powered tools, dimensional work control, and slinging and signalling.
Assessment is evidence-based and assignment-based, with competence assessed and internally verified by centre staff and subject to external quality assurance by ProQual. This workplace-focused approach enables learner to build a credible record of practical competence while supporting further professional development and progression within land drilling and the wider construction sector.
