Qualification Structure

The ProQual Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination Occupations (Construction) – Testing, Inspecting and Thorough Examination of Plant, Machinery, Equipment or Accessories is awarded by ProQual Awarding Body and regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). The qualification has been accredited onto the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). It has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 750 hours and 187 Guided Learning Hours (GLH).

Assessment is assignment-based and evidence-based, requiring the learner to provide appropriate evidence demonstrating competence in testing, inspecting and thoroughly examining plant, machinery, equipment or accessories in accordance with relevant occupational requirements and standards.

The learner will be able to:

• Offer advice and assistance regarding work activities and encourage questions, clarification and feedback.
• Clarify proposals with relevant personnel and discuss alternative approaches.

Unit 3: Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace

The learner will be able to:

• Assess available project information accurately to determine the appropriate occupational method of work.
• Obtain additional information from suitable sources when project data is insufficient.
• Identify work methods that make effective use of resources while meeting project, statutory and contractual requirements.
• Confirm and communicate the selected method of work to relevant personnel.
• Consider health and safety, environmental, resource, quality and contractual requirements when determining work methods.

Unit 4: Inspecting Plant or Machinery for Operational Serviceability in the Workplace

The learner will be able to:

• Interpret relevant information, specifications, risk assessments, manuals and manufacturers' information for inspection activities.
• Apply relevant legislation, official guidance and organisational requirements when inspecting plant or machinery.
• Maintain safe and healthy working practices during inspection activities.
• Select appropriate resources, tools, equipment and consumables for the inspection process.
• Minimise the risk of damage to plant, machinery, the work area and surrounding environment.
• Complete inspection activities within the allocated time and in accordance with the work programme.
• Carry out routine, periodic, pre-use and post-use inspections and accurately record and report findings.
• Identify deterioration, damage, excessive wear, leaks, critical and non-critical defects and assess the operational serviceability of plant or machinery.
• Distinguish between testing, inspection and thorough examination and use appropriate inspection and diagnostic equipment.
• Maintain inspection records and communicate findings effectively with relevant personnel.

Unit 5: Carrying Out Specific Tests on Plant or Machinery to Determine Operational Serviceability in the Workplace

he learner will be able to:

• Interpret specifications, drawings, risk assessments, method statements, manuals and manufacturers' information relevant to testing activities.
• Apply relevant legislation, official guidance and organisational requirements when conducting specific tests.
• Maintain safe and healthy working practices throughout testing activities.
• Select suitable testing equipment, tools, materials, components and consumables.
• Minimise the risk of damage to plant, machinery, equipment and surrounding areas.
• Complete testing activities within allocated timescales and according to specified procedures.
• Carry out specific tests to assess operational serviceability, statutory compliance, policy compliance and operational efficiency.
• Perform functional, operational and safety checks on plant and machinery.
• Measure, test and compare readings, outputs, tolerances and performance data against specified requirements.
• Use appropriate specialist test and diagnostic equipment and confirm its calibration.
• Analyse test results, identify inconsistent data and determine the significance of findings.
• Record, report and maintain accurate evidence of test results and outcomes.
• Safely conduct tests across relevant systems and equipment, including hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, electrical, transmission, lifting and load-testing applications, as applicable to the selected endorsements.
