The ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drilling Fluids (Mud) Technology is a UK-regulated qualification designed to develop essential knowledge of drilling fluids and their critical role in oil and gas drilling operations. Accredited onto the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), the qualification provides a structured foundation for understanding modern drilling mud technology.
The qualification covers the composition, properties, functions and applications of drilling fluids, including water-based, oil-based and synthetic-based mud systems. Learner develops an understanding of how drilling fluids support formation-pressure control, wellbore stability, cuttings removal, cooling, lubrication and buoyancy during drilling operations.
Key areas include drilling fluid testing, mud circulation systems, fluid density, kick prevention, solids control, drilling waste management and operational troubleshooting. The qualification also addresses environmental sustainability, including waste reduction, recycling, treatment, disposal and the impact of improper drilling-fluid management.
This drilling fluids technology qualification is suitable for individuals seeking foundational knowledge for careers in oil and gas drilling, wellsite operations, drilling support, mud systems and related petroleum engineering environments. It can also support existing industry personnel seeking to strengthen their technical understanding of drilling mud systems and their operational applications.
By completing the ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drilling Fluids (Mud) Technology, learner gains industry-relevant knowledge that supports safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible drilling practices while establishing a foundation for further professional development in drilling and petroleum operations.
The ProQual Level 2 Award in Understanding Drilling Fluids (Mud) Technology is an Ofqual-regulated qualification accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). The qualification has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 30 hours, including 30 Guided Learning Hours (GLH).
Assessment is assignment-based only and conducted on a Pass/Fail basis. Work is internally assessed and verified by centre staff, with external quality assurance provided by ProQual Verifiers to ensure assessment decisions meet required quality and regulatory standards.
To achieve the qualification, learner must successfully complete one mandatory unit.
