Qualification Structure

The NOCN Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is an Ofqual-regulated qualification accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). The qualification has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 240 hours and 144 Guided Learning Hours (GLH), with 24 credits, including a minimum of 8 hours of observed teaching practice.

Assessment for the NOCN Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed to assess learners’ knowledge, understanding and practical application of English language teaching principles and techniques. Assessment includes written assignments and observed teaching practice in accordance with NOCN assessment and quality assurance requirements.

To achieve the qualification, learners must successfully complete all 7 mandatory units and a selected elective unit.

• Planning Learning — 2 credits
• Classroom Management — 1 credit

Total Mandatory Units: 22 credits

Elective Units

Learners must select one of the following elective units, worth 2 credits:

• Teaching in Adverse Circumstances (very large classes and/or low-resource environment) — 2 credits
• Preparing Online Content and Teaching Online — 2 credits
• Intercultural Awareness for Teaching, Learning and Assessment — 2 credits
• Teaching Young Learners — 2 credits
• Teaching English for Professional or Business Purposes — 2 credits
• Teaching English for Academic Purposes — 2 credits

Elective Requirement: 2 credits from one selected unit

Total Qualification: 24 credits = 22 mandatory credits + 2 elective credits.
