The NOCN Entry Level Certificate in ESOL International (Entry 2) is an English language qualification designed for non-native English speakers who are developing practical communication skills. It is an Entry 2 qualification aligned with A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), providing a recognised benchmark for basic English proficiency. NOCN identifies the qualification within the Foundations for Learning and Life sector and lists it under qualification number 601/2328/X. NOCN

The qualification focuses on the practical use of English across the four core language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Learners develop the ability to understand and communicate straightforward information in familiar situations, including personal, public, educational and occupational contexts. The qualification therefore focuses on functional English rather than purely theoretical language knowledge. NOCN

The course structure supports development through three mandatory learning areas: ESOL International Reading, ESOL International Speaking and Listening, and ESOL International Writing. Together, these areas help learners strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, spoken interaction, written communication and the ability to respond appropriately to everyday English-language situations.

The NOCN Entry Level Certificate in ESOL International (Entry 2) is suitable for learners in the UK and internationally who want formal recognition of developing English language competence. It can also provide a foundation for continued ESOL development and progression towards higher levels of English proficiency, subject to the requirements of the next programme or institution.
