Task Purpose

This task is designed to develop your ability to interpret fire safety policies,
procedures, and standards, and understand their practical application in the
workplace. Fire safety documentation often contains complex clauses, requirements,
and recommendations, which must be correctly interpreted to ensure compliance, safe
operation, and protection of life and property.
The purpose of this task is to strengthen your analytical skills, improve your
understanding of fire safety standards, and demonstrate the implications of non
compliance in a workplace setting.

Scenario

You are the Fire Safety Officer for a multi-storey commercial office building. As part of
your role, management has asked you to review certain sections of fire safety
policies and standards and provide a written interpretation. Your objective is to explain
the meaning of key clauses, describe how they apply to your workplace, and outline the
potential consequences of non-compliance.
The assessor has provided extracts from ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and
Safety, BS 9999: Fire Safety in the Design, Management and Use of Buildings, and
the company’s internal Fire Safety Policy.

Task Instructions

Extract A – ISO 45001:2018, Clause 8.1 – Operational Planning and Control

“The organization shall plan, implement, and control the processes needed to meet fire
safety requirements, including the identification of hazards, assessment of risks, and
implementation of controls. Processes shall be maintained and monitored for
effectiveness.”

Extract B – BS 9999:2017, Clause 7.3 – Fire Protection Systems

“Where active fire protection systems are installed, they shall be designed, installed,
commissioned, and maintained in accordance with current standards, ensuring reliability
and effectiveness in protecting life and property. Records of maintenance and
inspection shall be retained.”

Extract C – Company Fire Safety Policy, Section 4.2 – Access for Fire Service

“All fire exits, access roads, and points of entry for emergency services must be kept
unobstructed at all times. Fire Safety Officers are responsible for ensuring these routes
are inspected weekly, and any deficiencies are corrected immediately.”
