Qualification Structure

The ProQual Level 6 Diploma in Utility Mapping and Surveying is a UK-recognised qualification awarded by ProQual Awarding Body and regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). The qualification has been accredited onto the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), providing a structured framework for recognising advanced knowledge and occupational competence in utility mapping and surveying.

The qualification has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 400 hours, including 230 Guided Learning Hours (GLH). • Ensure surveying equipment is appropriate, secure, properly checked, adjusted and fit for purpose before measurements are undertaken.
• Manage the observation and recording of site surveys while maintaining required accuracy, controlling costs, minimising disruption and adapting procedures to changing site conditions.
• Establish and maintain appropriate horizontal and vertical controls, observations, measurements, survey records and secure data management arrangements.

• Identify mapping and spatial data requirements, including required survey information, accuracy, outputs, mapping methods, compilation sources, resources and project timescales.
• Develop appropriate method statements, programmes and budgets for mapping activities and establish suitable arrangements for collecting, compiling, managing and presenting mapping data.
• Select competent individuals or organisations where mapping activities or specialist data collection need to be commissioned.
• Assess, validate and produce mapping data by applying appropriate data standards, quality assurance procedures, security controls, permissions and copyright requirements.
• Check information from relevant sources, reject invalid data, maintain accurate compilation records and histories, and accurately interpret, analyse, extract, compile and compute spatial information.
• Present processed mapping information in appropriate formats, including databases and data systems, and provide suitable guidance for the interpretation, management, use and ongoing maintenance of the resulting information.

Unit 4: Vacuum Excavations

• Explain the appropriate applications, uses, benefits, limitations and environmental considerations associated with vacuum excavation equipment.
• Apply appropriate safety requirements for vacuum excavation, including risk assessment, method statements, equipment safety features, pre-use checks, correct operation and equipment maintenance.
• Interpret project information relevant to vacuum excavation, including drawings, instructions, specifications, method statements, schedules and manufacturer information, and identify procedures for dealing with inaccurate information or unsuitable resources.
• Plan and manage vacuum excavation activities by organising resources, coordinating plant operations, communicating effectively with the team, developing suitable excavation methods and maintaining safe working practices and site requirements.

Unit 5: Identify hazards and control risks in geomatics and site surveying management

• Identify hazards, assess risks and implement effective risk reduction methods within geomatics and site surveying environments.
• Evaluate potential hazards, residual risks, likelihood and severity, and select appropriate controls that comply with relevant regulations, guidance and organisational requirements.
• Establish and maintain risk reduction procedures, communicate significant residual risks, allocate appropriate resources and record risk management information within relevant systems.
• Establish and use effective systems for managing health, safety and welfare, including allocating responsibilities, providing hazard warnings, arranging suitable resources and first-aid arrangements, reporting accidents and emergencies, preventing recurrence and ensuring appropriate workforce training.
