Programme Overview

The BA (Hons) Early Childhood (Top-Up) is designed for students who have already completed a Level 5 qualification, such as a Foundation Degree, HND, or Diploma in Early Childhood or Education, and wish to progress to a full UK honours degree. This final-year programme (Level 6) provides a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of early childhood theories, practices, and services while developing the confidence and skills required for professional success.

The course blends academic study with practical application, exploring key themes such as child development, pedagogy of play, inclusion, children’s rights, and leadership in early years settings. Academic Requirements

  • Direct entry to Level 6 requires a Foundation Degree, BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in a subject-related area (e.g., Early Childhood, Education, Childcare, or a closely related discipline).
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate recognised prior learning up to Level 5.

Other Requirements

  • Shortlisted applicants may be invited to attend an interview.
  • Entry to this course requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check on the Child Workforce and Child Barring List, along with subscription to the DBS Update Service.
  • For international applicants, an overseas equivalent police clearance is required.

The programme is delivered at Level 6 (final year of a UK bachelor’s degree) and combines theoretical study with practical application.   • Academic English A year‑long module designed to strengthen academic vocabulary, subject‑specific terminology, and presentation skills. Tailored support is provided for students for whom English is an additional language.
  • Literacy and Numeracy Development in the Early Years Examine how children acquire language and number skills from birth to age 7. Explore neuroscience, established theory, and critical research to identify best practices in teaching and learning.
